It is estimated that over 40,000 people perish every year due to car crashes. Car crashes are also the number one cause of death for teens learning to drive. The effects of such tragedies impact our family members, friends, and our employers. There are several major effects of these accidents. There are several major causes of accidents. As a result, there are several steps that can be taken to prevent some of these accidents in the future.

Major Causes of Car Crashes

Distracted Driving – Includes drowsy driving, multitasking, eating while driving, setting a gps while driving, talking on the phone while driving, texting while driving, etc. Even using the hands-free devices have proven to be risky. Science has shown that brain activity that processes the imagery we see decreases by one-third when listening to a telephone conversation. Proving that multitasking is a myth.

Speeding – Many motor vehicle accidents have been attributed to rising speed limits over the past twenty years.

Alcohol – Is involved in one-third of all traffic fatalities in the United States. This statistic has been holding steady for over twenty years. This is compounded by the fact that one in eight people polled have admitted to driving when impaired by the influence of alcohol.

How Car Crashes Effect Employment

Many jobs are driving based, and driving accidents obviously impact those jobs. However, car crashes also impact our non-driving jobs. These crashes account for 80% of employer crash related health benefit costs, and half of all crash related injuries cause employees to miss work. Employers are also effected by the decrease in well-being, health, and productivity of the employee and by health insurance costs.

How to stop these accidents

There are several organizations that are working to prevent these types of accidents. These organizations include:

Consumer Healthcare Products Association

Governors Highway Safety Association

National Sleep Foundation

Recording Artists, Actors, and Athletes Against Drunk Driving

Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility

Students Against Destructive Decisions

Mostly, it is important for every driver to take responsibility for our own actions. Be proactive. DO NOT drive while distracted, under the influence, and do not speed.
